The building of the house of scientists in Tomsk is the former residence of the Tomsk Governor. It is Located on Sovetskaya street 45. The decision to build a residence was made in 1887, in the old days, the governors rented a house from Tomsk homeowners. Construction was delayed and was successfully completed after the spring of 1891, the Tomsk authorities received news that the heir to the throne — Tsarevich Nikolai Romanov-would pass through Tomsk, returning from a trip around the world. If the crown Prince wants to show the people, from Novo Sobornaya square the building was attached balcony with roof-umbrella (later rebuilt in the porch). The Tsarevich visited Tomsk in July 1891, lived in the Governor's house for two days (July 5-6) and from the balcony of the house welcomed the gathered citizens in the evening of July 5.

After 1917, the Governor's residence became known as the house of freedom. In the 1920s, it housed various organs of Soviet power: the Presidium of the Tomsk Executive Committee, the Presidium of the district Executive Committee.

In 1927, the house of scientists was established in the building as a center of culture and leisure of scientific and creative intelligentsia. Tomsk house of scientists was the first in Siberia. The House managed to preserve the interior of the building, preserved restored furniture of the late XIX-early XX centuries.
